Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)

If your child has experienced a traumatic event and is experiencing changes in behavior, mood, or emotional reactivity, they may need specialized support.

TF-CBT is a specific type of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that includes specific strategies to help your child process and heal from the impact of traumatic experiences (e.g., fires or natural disasters, traumatic grief, car accident or other type of accident, medical trauma, violence or abuse). Like more general CBT, TF-CBT includes learning cognitive coping strategies, problem solving, and emotion regulation skills. Building on this foundation of skills, TF-CBT incorporates narrative processing of trauma to promote emotional recovery, reduce trauma responses, and promote future orientation. Specialized developmentally appropriate techniques are utilized to support gradual exposure to trauma processing and trauma reminders for children and adolescents. Parent/caregiver involvement is also leveraged to support use of skills and the healing process.

At Brave Minds Psychology Center, I offer TF-CBT for youth and teens, working closely with individuals and families to create a treatment plan personalized for them.
